The 8 Best Active Recall Apps in 2026

We reviewed 8 study apps on the two things active recall needs: questions that make you answer from memory, and reviews that come back before you forget. Here is how they rank.

The best app for active recall is StudyGlen. It turns your own PDF, photo of notes or YouTube video into flashcards and a quiz — multiple choice, true/false, short answer and fill-in-the-blank, with an explanation on every answer — then schedules every review with FSRS-6 by default. One AI deck or quiz a day is free. Anki is the best free option if you will write every card yourself.

Rereading feels productive because the page looks familiar — but familiar is not the same as remembered. In a 2006 study by Roediger and Karpicke, students who practised recalling a passage remembered substantially more of it a week later than students who reread it, even though the rereaders felt more confident. An active recall app makes that retrieval the default every time you study.

What is active recall?

Active recall is studying by pulling an answer out of memory before you look at it — answering a flashcard, a practice question or a blank-page prompt — instead of rereading, highlighting or rewatching. The effort of retrieving is what strengthens the memory, and every miss shows you exactly what to review. Researchers call it retrieval practice, and the benefit is known as the testing effect.

The evidence is unusually strong. In Roediger and Karpicke (2006), students who took recall tests on a prose passage retained substantially more of it two days and one week later than students who reread it the same number of times. In Karpicke and Blunt (2011), retrieval practice produced more learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping — including on test questions that required inferences, so it is not only for memorising facts.

A 2013 review of ten common study techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues gave its top "high utility" rating to just two: practice testing, which is active recall, and distributed practice, which is spaced repetition. Rereading and highlighting were rated low utility.

So the app you pick matters. A good active recall app does three jobs: it gives you questions worth answering, it makes you produce the answer instead of recognising it, and it brings each question back on a schedule. The apps below differ most on the first job — who writes the questions.

Active recall vs spaced repetition: what's the difference?

Active recall is how you review: you answer from memory. Spaced repetition is when you review: each item returns after a gap that grows every time you remember it, timed for just before you would forget. One is the method, the other is the schedule.

They work best together, and running both is the job of a study app. Active recall without a schedule drifts into cramming — testing everything the night before. Spaced repetition without recall is just rereading at intervals. An app that asks you to answer first, records how it went and then schedules the next review gives you both in every session.

Where apps differ is the scheduler. FSRS, the open-source algorithm StudyGlen runs on every deck by default, predicts how likely you are to remember each card and times the next review to match. SM-2, still the default in Anki and RemNote, grows intervals with fixed multipliers. Knowt, Quizlet and Gizmo have spaced repetition modes but do not publish their algorithm. Our spaced repetition apps comparison covers the algorithms in depth, and our active recall flashcards guide shows how to write and review good cards.

The short answer

Active recall means answering from memory; spaced repetition means reviewing at growing intervals. You want both. StudyGlen writes the questions from your own material and schedules every review with FSRS-6 by default, so each session is a recall attempt at the moment it does the most good.

Which active recall app should you use?

A quick way to decide:

  • 1.

You want the questions written for you from your own slides, PDFs, notes or lecture videos → StudyGlen. One upload gives you flashcards and a practice quiz with an explanation on every answer, scheduled with FSRS-6.

  • 2.

You want a free app with total control and don't mind writing every card → Anki. Turn on FSRS in the deck options.

  • 3.

You take detailed notes and want flashcards inside them → RemNote.

  • 4.

You are leaving Quizlet and want its study modes free → Knowt, which imports Quizlet sets and keeps Learn, Practice Test and Spaced Repetition free on your own sets.

  • 5.

You mainly want sets other people have already made → Quizlet for the largest library, or Brainscape for expert-certified exam decks.

  • 6.

You study more when it feels like a game → Gizmo, with Hearts, streaks, XP and leagues.

  • 7.

You want a simple, offline flashcard app with Markdown and an FSRS option → Mochi.

For most students the deciding factor is time. If writing the questions takes longer than answering them, active recall is hard to keep up. That is where AI earns its place — as long as the app still makes you answer from memory and schedules the next review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best app for active recall?

StudyGlen is the best active recall app for most students: it turns your own PDFs, photos of notes and YouTube videos into flashcards and a practice quiz, then schedules every review with FSRS-6 by default. One AI deck or quiz a day is free, and credit packs start at $4.99 with no expiry. If you would rather write every card yourself and pay nothing, Anki is the best free option.

Is active recall the same as spaced repetition?

No. Active recall is how you study: you answer from memory instead of rereading. Spaced repetition is when you study: each item comes back at growing intervals, just before you would forget it. A 2013 review by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed practice — the research names for the two — as the only high-utility techniques of the ten it examined. A good app combines them: every review is a recall attempt, and an algorithm such as FSRS decides when it happens.

Is Anki active recall?

Yes. Anki shows the front of a card, you try to recall the answer before revealing it, and then you rate how well you remembered — that is active recall, and the Anki manual names active recall and spaced repetition as its two core principles. Type-in-the-answer cards and cloze deletions make the recall stricter. Anki does not write cards for you, and its default scheduler is SM-2; FSRS is built in but has to be switched on.

Is Quizlet active recall?

Partly. Flashcards mode is active recall if you answer before you flip, and its Spaced Repetition option, on the website only, uses your rating to decide when a card comes back. Learn can include written questions, where you type the answer instead of picking it. Browsing cards and matching games are closer to recognition than recall. Full Learn mode needs Quizlet Plus.

Can AI make active recall questions from my notes?

Yes, and it removes the slowest part of active recall: writing the questions. StudyGlen reads a PDF, a photo of your notes, pasted text or a YouTube video and writes flashcards plus multiple choice, true/false, short answer and fill-in-the-blank questions, with an explanation on every answer. RemNote, Knowt, Brainscape and Gizmo also generate cards from files, with tighter free limits. Check AI questions against your material, and make sure the app still asks you to answer from memory.

Which app uses active recall and spaced repetition together?

Every app on this list combines them; the difference is the schedule. StudyGlen runs FSRS-6 on every deck by default. Anki and RemNote use SM-2 by default, with FSRS as an opt-in. Mochi has its own algorithm with FSRS as an option. Knowt, Quizlet and Gizmo have spaced repetition modes but do not publish the algorithm, and Brainscape schedules cards by your 1–5 confidence rating.

Is there a free active recall app?

Yes. Anki is free on desktop, Android and the web (the iPhone app is $24.99 once). Mochi is free with unlimited offline cards. Knowt keeps every study mode free on your own sets, with ads. StudyGlen is free for unlimited review plus one AI deck or quiz a day, so you can make questions from your own material without paying.

Prefer active recall on your phone?

The free StudyGlen app for iPhone and Android runs the same FSRS reviews, and reviews work offline.
